I think that there are processes being confused:
- that which powers the sun
- that for photons to escape
If fusion stopped, then gravitational contraction would be the
only source of the solar energy (for about a million years).
Neutrinos have always escaped with very little stopping them.
(yes, it would be a better way to detect that the Sun has shut down.)
BTW, I don't think that the solar neutrino mystery is much of a
mystery any more.
