My intuition on this was perhaps influenced by
the fact that there are craters all over the
moon. From the point of view of the moon, there
is an object orbitting out there with a mass
80 times greater than the mass one is standing
upon. Clearly it didn't shield the moon from
impacts. If an object 80 times more massive
didn't mop up the stray meteors, one would scarcely
expect an object of 1/80th the mass and a similar
orbit to have much effect at all on the number
of impacts.
