Sheriff Ken Jenne of Broward Country Florida -- not CNN -- is most culpable
here. It appears that Sheriff Jenne, hiding behind his badge as a supposed
"weapons expert", deliberately misled CNN Miami bureau chief John Zarrella
and many of the CNN viewers. Like me Zarrella was too ignorant about the
finer details of rifles to understand the subtle deception. It is an
inherently confusing issue to non-gun-enthusiasts and it seems Sheriff Jenne
was trying to exploit that public confusion for his own political gains. I
would guess off-hand that the Sheriff has his eye on a mayorship and wants
to be known for being "tough on crime".
No doubt CNN received some clarifying criticisms of Sheriff Jenne's bogus
demonstration and explanations (not the least of which came from LaPierre of
the NRA on CNN itself). Upon learning of the confusion/deception perpetrated
by the Sheriff, CNN acted ethically and responsibly by clearing the matter
up this evening during prime time. Good for CNN.
If we're going to throw rotten fruit at anyone then it should be in the
general direction of Sheriff Ken Jenne of Broward County Florida. Aim for
his badge.
