Hmm, looks to me like that bar-chart is very misleading. They set the
metformin bar at 100% of "maximum effect at reproducing caloric restriction"
for the drugs they studied. The chart thus gives the visual impression that
metformin mimics 100% of the gene expression changes from CR. But in fact
that is not what the chart actually indicates.
I hope it is close to 100% mimicry as suggested by the visual appearance of
the chart and by the words in the article ("The overlap between the
drug-induced gene expression and those of CR is represented by the length of
the colored bars") but the caption below the chart suggests otherwise.
I think it was Mark Twain who said there are three kinds of lies: Lies,
Damned Lies, and Statistics. :)
