Damien,
I should have made myself clear. I was remarking on the source of
Heinlein's inspiration for that remark. As to your quotation, IMHO you were
well within the limits of fair play. LOL
Heinlein often commented on filing the serial numbers off old stories
(or idea?) to write new ones. My study of Heinlein tells me he did that a
lot. For example a group of us were just analyzing Between Planets. We were
informed that Heinlein's working papers says the story is to be Man without a
Country turned inside out.
Back to Sergeant Day/Smith. Heinlein and I were both in the American
Navy and without doubt he was as aware of Sergeant Day as I am -- Heck the
man is one of the super heroes of the USMC.
I felt fortunate to find your book as I thought it was a little older
than it is. Most of what I read is well represented by The Spike insofar as
being popular with the mass and probably about the same age. In our largest
bookstores I find a quarter of those book, or less, actually on the shelves.
I order the rest and never receive an estimated 10%.
