Though I was taught Latin and Greek in highschool, I was not much
interested then in politics (nor history).
And though I am now interested in politics (in fact reading Hayek with
pleasure right now), I have yet to make useful links with Ancient
Greece. (it's definitely somewhere among the next steps of my
intellectual development)
Regarding Jacqueline de Romilly and Jean-Pierre Vernant, I know them
by names and maybe some interviews, but I haven't read them. However,
they mainly appear in cultural contexts specifically linked with
Ancient Greece. They are not otherwise influent, as far as I know.
Vernant was (and probably still is) a communist if I'm not misled.
Now regarding your idea that "there might be fresh ideologicial
changes in Europe coming from the French side", my answer is : oh yes.
Just wait a little. French are intellectually resourceful. They are
just a bit lazy and too busy having fun to work seriously. They need
challenges (and we are facing some right now in France, really). Then
they wake up, and they usually do quite good.
