I don't think many people honestly believe that the poor are getting
poorer in an absolute sense. What those infected with an equality at
any cost meme find abhorrent is that the rich are getting richer even
faster than the poor are, hence the gap is widening. Or in common
parlance, envy.

Furthermore, if the 'downtrodden' are actually able to get up on their
own two feet without handouts, a lot of do-gooders will suddenly start
feeling rather obsolete.
