Scientific American just published an article about the
new consumer price index (CPI), (May issue 2001). There
were some miscalculations, and the newly revised figures
show that in America the poor are getting richer. The
bottom fifth of all families, it turns out, had a
higher family income in 1998 than in 1977.
Crime too has dropped since 1975, so the above statement
relies only on its claim of environmental loss.
