I suspect that Gould was seeking a separate peace with the high mucky mucks,
of theology, and such. To do that, one would need a big vision,
philosophically, on where humankind needs to go and what to do, and where shall we park,
when we do decide? My suspicion is that Gould was up to the challenge, but was
disinterested in anything to take him away from his discourse on palentology.
Its the rare individual, especially in the sciences, who is eager to "go large"
on a total, global, philosophy.
However, the rewards for doing this are indeed, sweet. They get to pick the
radio stations along the way.
