<<Which reminds me of another point. Synthetic oil is,
what, less than ten times as expensive as the real
thing? Even if all the natural oil were to go
away...>>
This may have been true during the 1970's, but this is not currently true. If
the price of a 55 gallon drum of oil is above 35.00 per barrel; gasoline
derived from coal becomes economically viable. The sequestering of COČ during
production of gasoline will make this product more expensive still.
Better to ask yourself if there is an economically viable means to produce
transportation fuels using wind, sun, geothermal, biomass, in sufficient
abundance to eventually, eliminate the need for fossil fuels? If no technology to
produce these fuels seems at hand, then we need to focus on exploiting fossil
fuels. We cannot fly to Mars on dreams alone.
