Yes Laser beams diverge but if you double the distance the intensity of the
radiation does not decrease to one quarter like it would with a regular
light bulb. The exact amount the beam would diverge and thus become less
intense depends on how well the laser was made. I seem to recall reading
about using the 200 inch telescope to shine a Laser beam on the moon, when
it hit the moon after more than a quarter of a million miles the diameter of
the light was bigger than 200 inches but still only about the size of a
tennis court.
