Well, I believe that the direction of the list is conformity. And also, it
becomes a mutual admiration society. This is quite typical of many lists, and
very human; but hardly, transhuman.
You could say that about any group or forum that maintains any greater degree
of focus than, say, an unmoderated newsgroup or Slashdot in -1 mode.
I, for one, have no bones conforming to something I agree with in the first
place and have agreed with before I even knew there was a name for it.
Mike is right about a bunch of things, but all too many of them are noisy,
contentious 20th century brick-and-mortar issues that really are less
important to the fate of humanity than what's on-topic for this list. In the
year 2XXX, will the name or flag of any contemporary nation have any meaning
outside the field of history? Will scarcity-era "capitalism" be any less
laughable than scarcity-era "socialism"?
Diversity of opinion is important. So, let's start a
Paleo-Libertarian/Conservative Extropian list and outsource all debate
regarding non science/technology/memetics topics to there. If there is demand,
lets also start a corresponding Liberal/Socialist Extropian list. And leave
this list to people who put the word Extropian first and the modifiers second
(or absent).
