Maybe the rabbits carry a poison in their system that kills meta-foxes, but
not foxes. Foxes may be a fairly new threat (on the evolutionary time scale)
while the meta-foxes have been around for some time. All of the meta-foxes
that would have eaten rabbits have all died off leaving only those who have
    a preference for rabbits.
