Maybe because rabbits are either invisible to metafoxes (no serious EM noise,
no energetic drive signatures moving away from stars, etc) whereas foxes are
visible, or maybe foxes are more nutritious than rabbits, having a tech base
which might be simple to amalgamate...

just two reasons off the top of my head...
