Those who have so far missed the experience might, in
this connection, want to pick up the truly delightful
Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars series - Red Mars, Green
Mars, Blue Mars - at least one of which got the Hugo
Award (best sf novel of the year). The subtext of the
colonization of Mars,* which forms the ongoing theme
and background of this monumental work, spanning
centuries and with dozens of fully-drawn fascinating
characters you will remember twenty years later, is
that very question of what the true, ultimate vision
and purpose of life is.
Summarizing: WE are the eyes, hands, mind of the
universe. Only through us is it aware of itself.
Only through our choices and values does it acquire
meaning and purpose. WE have the responsibility to
expand life and intelligence and ensure that it does
not perish, and the universe become blind, deaf and
useless. (In answer to a faction of colonists who
oppose "terraforming.")
*Hard science fans will truly enjoy Robinson's
detailed techno- vision - still almost 100% on target
a decade or so later, as well as his predictions of
water underground, etc., all totally on target with
current data.
