Too easy a dismissal, I think. You could equally well say that attempts to
refute McKibben make as much sense as those quadriplegics who, realizing
that they will never again be able to walk in the seasonal changes of the
woods, say that spending all day inside the hospital's unmodified light and
temperature is better than wading through fallen autumnal leaves or running
in bright sunlight.
I don't think either view is adequate, of course, but we need to give
McKibben's perspective its due in order to understand why so many people,
stifled by the oppressive uniformity of some elements of droning office
life, will warm to it.
