This is an important topic for extropians. When and
how do downloads, copies of downloads or other
entities with real, partial, or potential sentience
acquire rights? What rights do their creators have re
them?

The best model in real life that I've seen is that of
the ancient cultures in which the family introduced a
young adult to the bigger society and stood to make
good any debts or damages that resulted. A modern
version of this based on a personal trust and a
general social contract (yes, I'm still on that kick)
can be easilly envisioned.
