former NH Governor Mel Thompson's portrait in the NH statehouse has the
following engraving: "lower spending leads to lower taxes". NH has the
lowest spending and tax burden in the nation, and has for many years.
Fortunately, government employees don't get to set the budget. So long
as you don't pay your legislators (i.e. so they don't get to feeling
like they are also government employees too), they won't be so keen on
spending money either.
Also, one reason we use a property tax and no income tax is that the
income tax is taken out bit by bit every paycheck. Property taxes are
paid in lump sums 1-4 times a year. People hate writing those big
checks, so they vote for people who want to lower taxes.
