That's because religion and atheism are high-level interpretations of the
world adopted by human beings (or, more usually, colonizing human beings),
and human beings are not always peaceful due to all sorts of other drivers
that are quite capable of conscripting such interpretations to their goals.

On the other hand, there is one very powerful virtue of atheism over any
    religion: it's true.

Chances are, building your mental model of the world on lies and honestly
held mistakes rather than truth will have bad consequences sooner or later.
