We know advanced technological civilizations that want to build
Matrioshka Brains may want to perform star-lifting or even complete
stellar disassembly. Such process are not likely to be particularly
"orderly" esp. if you want to do them quickly.
Could be the unspecified companion(s) are Jupiter Brains sucking up
all the extra material the star is releasing. When one is dealing
with stellar sized gravity wells one may simply not bother to be
"polite" about the processes one uses.
