    Yes, and environment counts a lot, but that doesn't stop people from
    paying $500k for the right to breed with a winning horse. This breeding
    market is where the real money is in thoroughbred horse racing, and in
    fact many horses are never raced again (for fear of injury, etc.) after
    they get a major win or two under their belt.

    Apparently all the thoroughbreds in at least the USA can be traced back
    to an original three stallions.
