I (or rather some of y'all, the taxpayers who pay for my grant, and don't
think I'm not grateful, because I am) recently bought a Sony DVD+-R/RW for the
lab, and am happy with it so far. It reads and writes every DVD standard other
than DVD RAM which as you correctly pointed out should be avoided. It can
also read and write ordinary CD-Rs. Mine is an external with USB and Firewire
capability, but I think they sell internal ones too if you prefer.
The sony costs in the mid $400s. If you want something cheaper, go for a
DVD+R/RW. The reason is that the DVD+ standard is more compatible with
"normal" DVD players, i.e. the ones that are attached to televisions rather
than to computers. Good luck!
