Guys, Im trying to order a new computer, but havent been
keeping up the last couple years. Being as I am more of
a math geek than a computer type, I got confused by the
new standards for DVD writers. Last I bought a computer
(about 2 yrs ago) I dont recall two different standards.
Now they have a DVD-R/WR. My mathematical mind sees
the Rs cancelling to just DVD-1/W. Then there is the
DVD+R/RW. I asked the lackey working at Fry's and he
said they were two different standards. Shelly suggested
we get one with both standards, the DVD-R/RW and the
DVD+R/RW. I suggested that the - and the + would cancel
and we would be left with just 2DVD. Redundant.
Then we saw something like the absolute value of R/RW
by Sony, a +/-R/RW, I said, thats it, we are outta here,
I need to make a withdrawal from the great extropian
knowledge bank.
So please, some of you cluey cats that are computer
hipsters, do post your thoughts. I use the DVD writer
as a backup device and anticipate getting a digital
videocamera pretty soon. Other than that, the computer
is used mostly for email and searching for the next
record prime number. Im willing to drop the usual
20 to 25 Franklins. What should I get?
