There is an old Sikh saying: "A cobra spits, a Pathan speaks, who will
    grow rich on the difference?"

Reporters lie not just to make their column inches. There is an
interesting 'novel' recently put out by another dismissed "reporter"
which is heavily autobiographical. They lie for many reasons: for an
agenda, to report not what happened, but what they think should have
happened, but many times just to tell a good yarn. They frankly don't
give much of a damn whether you object to how they misrepresented you.
Neither do their editors. I woman I know once rescued a kid from rising
flood waters in a gorge. The reporter who covered the story essentially
condemned her for keeping her infant in her backpack while she effected
the rescue, as if this made her a terrible mother and person rather
than the hero she was and is. When she confronted the reporter about
the facts of the situation, the reporter said, "I don't care what you
think, I decide what the real story is and there's nothing you can do
    about it, bitch."
