There's also the 1989 DOE report on the subject, online at
< http://www.ncas.org >, in the "ONLINE LIBRARY" link.
The chair of that committee, John R. Huizenga, has written an
account of the episode: "Cold Fusion: The Scientific Fiasco of
the Century."
And journalist Gary Taubes has written an account covering pretty
much the same ground, but in journalistic style. The title is
"Bad Science: The Short Life and Weird Times of Cold Fusion."
Both works are available from online booksellers and can usually
be found on e-Bay.
Apart from style, the main difference between the two accounts is
that Taubes emphasizes a number of incidents indicating
scientific fraud and experimental error on the part of cold
fusion claimants. Their own behavior points fairly strongly
toward the original claimants, Fleischmann and Pons, as having
perpetrated scientific fraud. Another participant in the cold
fusion furor, a fellow named Bockris at Texas A&M, put out some
highly suspect data, almost certainly fraudulent, but probably
the work of a lab assistant. And there were almost too many cases
to count of red-faced retractions by experimenters who thought at
first that they had confirmed the Fleischman-Pons claim, but later
discovered subtle errors in their procedures that negated the
initial findings.
