Camping out creates no economic activity beyond the purchase of
gasoline. Every other expense incurred is equal to what one would spend
to spend the weekend at home...
A hunter goes beyond this:
a) he buys a hunting license
b) he buys a firearm
c) he buys ammunition
d) he takes a hunter safety course at least once in his life
e) he expends ammo at the shooting range to practice and improve his
accuracy, sight in his weapon, etc
f) he joins a shooting club to perform (e)
g) when he bags his game, he hires a butcher, and possibly a
taxidermist.
h) he joins an organization that engages in protecting and enhancing
wildlife habitat.
i) if he is traveling, he may hire a guide.
j) if he is going to extreme wilderness, he may buy or rent other
equipment like canoes, float planes, etc.
k) he would also buy and/or rent all the same camping equipment that
non-hunting campers use.
Hunting finances all of the real game animal habitat preservation and
enhancement that occurs in the US. You may think that the Sierra Club,
or Earth First, or Greenpeace may do this, but they do not. Greenpeace
only protects whales and dolphins and other marine mammals. Earth First
protects trees, and the Sierra Club only protects miniscule and
economically useless animals that reside in the way of massive
commercial enterprises.
