More accurately, ketones are breakdown products of fat metabolism. During
ketosis the body uses ketones for energy rather than glucose.

A huge theoretical problem I have with Atkins is that the brain subsists
almost entirely on glucose. It uses something like 25% of available glucose
while representing only something like 5% of total body weight. Dr. Atkins
cites a study showing that the brain can burn ketones rather than glucose,
but ketones are hardly the preferred fuel for my second most treasured
    organ.

By the way Dr. Atkins is on life-support right now after slipping on the ice
and hitting his head. Under the circumstances I don't want to say bad things
    about the man.
