That's true, though the first 10-15 lbs of weight-loss is mostly water, as
ketosis kicks in. The diuretic effect of ketosis is one reason the Atkins
diet is so popular for quick (apparent) weight loss.

My own view is that Atkins works for weight loss because it is a reasonable
facsimile of the paleo diet. It differs from paleo mainly in the inclusion
of dairy products like cheeses. But who needs cheese and other dairy
products? Cheese is essentially pure fat, and milk is little more than fat
and sugar mixed in water. Furthermore dairy fat is mostly unhealthy
saturated fat.
You might be surprised at how much weight you can lose by simply eliminating
agricultural and dairy products, without regard for anything else. The
former is basically empty calories and the latter is, as above, mostly
saturated fat.
