At least in Northern Germany where I live I have not heard sayings where
milk is involved.
We say Shit is steaming, or the child has fallen into the well. But this
proverb leaves no option to go to well and look if the child is still well.
Funny, now that I think about it. The child is left there in the well. No
one has a second look. The elders must have dug pretty deep to find water to
come to the final conclusion that looking for the child is no use. Pretty
damned resigning to one's fate, I must say...
What are you doing with your spilled milk in the US.? Trying to save the
carpet? or - the utilitarian perspective - yelling for the cat? As far as I
can see, spilled milk is somewhat easy to live with while children at the
bottom of a deep well...well....
