    Thanks Lee. Interesting. This is what I know for certain:

    1) I did a clean install of XP Professional on my stand-alone.
    2) I then disabled file and printer sharing for security reasons.
    3) I then experimented with a few P2P apps, including those such as Kazaa
    that I had used in my previous installation.
    4) I then uninstalled those P2P apps.
    5) I then discovered that file and printer sharing had somehow been
    re-enabled in the interim.

    I inferred then that file and printer sharing must be enabled for P2P apps
    to function, and that their installation enabled it.

    If you're right then there were other gremlins at work in my computer.
