The problem is that "karma" is an oversimplification. Take a look at
the slashdot karma system. It does have a cumulative number, but the
rankings fall into about 7 categories, including, e.g., funny,
insightful, troll, flamebait, etc., and in addition to displaying the
cumulative score of a post, the predominant category choosen is
displayed. (I believe that the poster's karma, however, is only
modified by the single numeric score.)
You could do approximately the same thing with just displaying several
different links below each post (instead of only two). The SlashCode is
a rather complex Perl script that probably would be too complicated for
most places, but I'm sure that there are simpler ways to do things, at
least if you don't need to handle their volume. (OTOH, I believe that
the SlashCode is open source, so if you want to put up such a site, and
can hack Perl, it might be a good choice.)
