    My guess is that it's more a geographical thing. Very densly
    built areas just don't have the space for everybody to have
    their own car and parking space is expensive and just not
    available. Also, in these areas public transport is frequent.

    In areas with more space, public transport is rarer and it is
    much more convenient to use your own car.

    As an example, when my father goes to Amsterdam he drives to
    a city near Amsterdam and takes the train from there. It's
    (1) faster, since Amsterdam always has traffic jams and parking
    space is hard to find and (2) cheaper, since parking space in
    Amsterdam costs about $5/hour and (3) more convenient.
