I just calculated that my 1988 Honda Integra with a somewhat hotted up 1.6
litre engine can still do about 45 miles per gallon in highway traffic
(though it drops to something more like 30 miles per gallon in city traffic
conditions), with plenty of power for climbing hills, etc. It also delivers
a lot of comfort. And that is a 15-y.o. car. Surely we could do better now.

So you don't have to drop down to a little underpowered boxy thing to have
what I'd consider a pretty good compromise of comfort, performance and fuel
consumption. What do you guys on this thread consider an acceptable
compromise if cars that get 40-50 mpg in American city traffic are out of
    the question?
