Because in 1991 virtually nobody (including me)
thought Saddam could remain in power more than
a few weeks, a month at most, after such a humiliating
military defeat. We were absolutely certain he would be
deposed from within and we were dead wrong.

I thought the same, and I was dead wrong.
The truth? Fears, fears, of course.
At the end of Desert Storm there was a
revolt, remember? Iraqi Curds and Iraqi Sciits
against Saddam and his guards. And US Gov. (and many
other western Govs. too) had fears. About a possible
gigantic extension of the revolt in Iraq, Turkey
(Curds)and Iran (Sciits). And Saddam, and his guards,
stopped all that.
