The big jump was when they went to that voice that
Steven Hawking used for his communications. There
was an inexpensive piece of software that allowed
one to type anything and have it come out in that
voice. I used it to make several gags on my home
answering machine:

"Hello. This is Professor Steven Hawking. The
Joneses are not here right now, for they are out
searching for black holes and baby universes, or
struggling to stay ahead of the neighbors. At
the sound of the tone, please leave a brief
history of time."

I had fun with that.
