That's an interesting way to put the sentiment. Do you realize that the
exact phrase could be used to describe the way British colonists in the
Americas felt about British troops being quartered in their homes? After
all, the only real complaint they had was British 'influence in a region
where they want[ed] to be top dog'.

I think some Middle Eastern folks might use the term 'army of occupation'
to describe what you are referring to as 'influence'.
