Evolution of Consciousness

If _we_ are our ideas than do ideas require self-awareness consciousness? I
got an idea from reading the book Snow Crash which was the idea that all
primates were not self-aware originally and that as they're brains increased
in size, they learned to use tools but the ability to use tools was a meme
and these memes spread across the land and became more and more complex and
actually fueled the use for the mutation of a larger brain size. What I'm
saying is that increasingly complex memes fueled the increase in brain size
and not the brain size fueling the increasingly more complex memes.
Therefore consciousness spread like a plague across the land. Also if apes
can learn memes than are they self-aware?
