I was surprised to learn that the earliest peice of literature in existence
deals with the quest for human immortality on Earth.
It's "The Epic of Gilgamesh", preserved in Cuneiform in clay tablets,
readable but fragmented in parts. It's about a king whose best friend dies.
He realizes he will die eventually too, and goes on a quest to search for
the secret to immortality. It's from about 2000 BC. The stuff which is not
about his immortality quest is interesting too. I'm going to name my first
child "Gilgamesh".
