Dr. Hughes, I hope you don't lose respect for me after I say this, but in
my opinion, this is yet another thinly veiled attack from the growing
luddite lobby and we should not get suckered into this. Note the sponsors
list-- Greenpeace? Earth First Journal? Not all science- and space-related
activism is neceserily germane to Transhumanist goals. The military has
long been and still is a major driving force for developing technologies
for affordable exploration and development of space (wow, something to
piss off both the libertarians and the liberals encapsulated in one
sentence).

Here's a litmus test to tell the principled pacificst from the knee-jerk
anti-everything luddite:

"You're right, it's bad for governments to use space for defense
purposes. But there needs to be some kind of motivation to bootstrap
us there, right?"

...pause here. This should flush out the more obvious luddites.

"So while we're protesting against military use of space, lets also
demand larger tax breaks and fewer restrictions on private companies
seeking to develop space for peaceful commercial uses."

This should catch the rest of them.
