I have a friend Michael Mateas, who is currently working towards his
Ph.D at CMU. His work primarily revolves around developing believable
agents in a MOO or MUD environment. I believe his work has direct
relevance in creating the kinds of personality improvement agents that
Max More talked about at the Extro-3 conference. He has successfully
completed an artificial world where you the user interact with several
'believable agents' in a fast-food restaurant. The agents behavior
changes in response to your actions. Your mission, if you decide to
accept it, is to survive and thrive the fast-food experience.
