I've been playing acoustic guitar for about a year and a half, and recently
made the big jump to an electric. As I joyfully working my fingers to the
bone on this curvaceous wonder, it occurs to me that the electric guitar
provides a nice metaphor for budding transhumans. Its acoustic predecessors,
though finely crafted, sorely lacked the power and flexibility of the
electric. By layering recent technologies on a well-established foundation,
the electric guitar upgraded musical expression to a far higher and broader
level. The whammy bar alone adds a whole new vocabulary of nuance! Throw in
variations on pickups, amps, and MIDI processing . . . and--mother of
Hayek!--it makes my head spin!
