Subject: Mensa-style organizations: advice requested

This is kinda off-topic; sorry. Replies should probably come direct to me,
off-list.

I'm writing some fiction that involves a bunch of people many of whom
belong to an invented self-selected high-IQ sub-culture. I'm supposing its
intake is somewhat smarter than Mensa, by test. Anyone here been part of
such a group, and care to advise me on how it worked out? I'm especially
interested in possible parallels with science fiction fandom: do/did such
groups produce fanzines (these days presumably replaced by netzines and
lists, etc, but my setting is mostly at least a decade ago)? conventions?
masquerades? way more males than females? is there the sf tendency toward
fat and socially um challenged?

Thanks.
