ASTRO: recc.: Meade ETX-60AT Astro Telescope?

I've never owned a decent amateur optical telescope,
but am interested in picking one up.

I saw an ad in this month's National Geographic for
a Meade ETX-60AT Astro Telescope, selling with Autostar
Hand Controller for $299. Found the online product listing:
"http://www.meade.com/catalog/etx60-70/index.html"

I'm primary interested in observing Earth's moon, Mars,
our gas giants and their larger moons, NEO Eros, as well as
some of the brighter stars (higher absolute magnitude)
and galaxies.

Anyone have experience with Meade optics? Any contrary
recommendations?
