That [NIG] was added by Lee. I certainly didn't have Nigerians in mind. (I
assume that's the group Lee was hinting at.) Nor the Niggardly Rich. The
allegorical victim slot was deliberately left open, to be filled in by the
reader. I originally wrote AUSTRALIANS, but decided that was too local to
convey my meaning. And the most recent lynching I recall hearing about in
the USA involved the murder of a white gay youth (presumably for the
greater good), so the first two letters of Lee's interpolation would have
been inappropriate anyway.
