Wooo hoooo!
After returning from a way cool three day camping trip, I find in the
email that the 40th Mersenne prime has been reported. Verification
is underway, should take a couple weeks. It isn't a 10 million digit
prime, so the $100k reward is still out there.
If verified as correct (all GIMPS-reported primes so far have been
correct),
it will have been discovered on the 4th anniversary of the discovery
of the 38th Mersenne prime, and a few days after a fortunate exchange
with Damien Broderick on the subject. Perhaps it will not be too late
to update once again his German edition of Der Schpike.
