           The writer John Taylor Gatto in his book Dumbing Us Down makes a very
    good case for the sources of patriotism -- If I understand you correctly you
    believe that " Patriotism (which is a form of community spirit) helped to
    make organized society possible."
           Gatto's analysis is a little bit different than yours but he does
    believe there is a benefit resulting from the long association within a
    community. Patriotism, however, sounds to me much more like the arrangements
    that early man made for the protection of his family as described by Desmond
    Morris in his books Naked Ape and then the Human Zoo.
