    Dan,
The American Founding Fathers spoke often of Enlightened Self
Interest. I think an enlightened patriotism or nationalism is a positive
value. It is not the only value. It is not the supreme value IMHO.
In the comment that we should love our neighbor as ourselves it is
implied that we should love ourselves. Similarly, if I understand the Sufi
the first thing we have to do is to understand ourselves. If we do that, and
only then, we can understand others. That in turn leads to our understanding
the world. I think the same logic applies to love.
In the system I have just set up loving our country is just one of the
steps going from a proper love of self to a love of all mankind and then to
    all life.
