Damien,
I think you will find that what is happening in the US is more
accurately described as a swing into libertarianism (small L) As often as
the Libertarian Party is rejected at the polls they are having their ideas
and principles stolen to a fair thee well.
In a sense you are correct -- the arch conservatives in the US see
this movement as embracing conservative position. They would dearly love to
claim credit for the changes. To a degree they are even correct. But in the
end I hear the population becoming more libertarian.
Personally, I don't see the libertarian philosophy as being part of
the left wing - right wing mishmash. They are measured on a line having
totalitarians at one end and libertarians at the other. The libertarians, I
think correctly, identify both liberal and conservative as being very statist
and totalitarian. They declare a pox on both your houses.
I know this if we are to be Extropians and achieve those goals we will
do it as libertarians.
