An addendum: after looking him up on the net he seems to be using
transcranial magnetic stimulation in order to inhibit certain cortical
areas for research. So it is not an issue of choice of recreating but
rather a rational choice of research method (I'm still doubting about
whether he will succeed, but that is another thing; I'm betting more on
a non-localized receptor/neuromodulator interaction than any specific
cortical circuits as the cause).
