Ed Regis got the mechanics largely right, although he left out Dave Krieger's
important admonition, "Thumb on the outside! Thumb on the outside!" And Ed
didn't describe the most fitting accompanying exhortation: "Forward!" (as
palms contact) "Upward!" (as hands rise) "Outward!" (as hands separate at the
top).
Silly? Very. But humor played a big role in those early Extropian gatherings
(and no doubt still does, albeit perhaps in better taste and with less
energy). Some of us even posited a 6th Principle: Earn Fun.
Still, I wouldn't say, as does John:

I'm not sure what I would have called the early Extropian movement, but I'm
sure I would not have called it a fraternity!
